Why doesn’t Text-to-Speech start when I press Option+Z?

Make sure that you have selected the text you want read aloud. If you have the correct text selected, you might need to change your hotkey settings. Click here to watch a video tutorial that demonstrates how to change your TTS hotkey settings.

I clicked on the button to install an extension, but I’m getting a message that says my browser is not supported. What’s going on?

The extensions can only be installed from browser they are designed for. For example, the Change Colors extension is only available for Chrome, so you would need to make sure you are using the Chrome web browser instead of Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. If you don’t have Google Chrome on your computer, click here to go to a page that will help you install it.

Why doesn’t a definition/translation pop up when I click on a word in a Google Doc?

Google Docs disables the pop-up feature of the dictionary and translator extensions. To get a definition or translation of a word or sentence in a Google Doc, you need to copy and paste it into the drop-down menu that appears when you click the icon for the extension.

How do I exit the iReader format?

Hover your cursor over the bottom of the iReader screen until the control bar appears. The large “X” on the bottom right side is the exit button.

I know I installed all the right extensions in my browser; why don’t I see some of them in the toolbar?

Not all extensions are available all the time. Some of them are not compatible with certain websites, and when that happens, they do not appear in the toolbar.

I don’t like Checkvist and I want to use a different note-taker. Can I do that?

Yes, you can use any note-taker you want, but some have features that make note taking and using the ESTRELLAS strategies easier, like an outline format (topics/subtopics), ability to export, ease of access from within the browser window, and ability to have multiple outlines going at any given time.

One-Pagers

How do I get a one-pager to open in a separate tab?

Right click on the link (CTRL + click for Mac) and select “Open link in new tab” from the pop-up menu that appears.

How do I download a one-pager?

In Chrome, hover your cursor over the bottom right corner of the one-pager PDF. A menu will appear. Click the button that looks like a floppy disc; it is second from the right in the menu.

Strategies

Do I have to take the quiz after each strategy module? Who sees my score?

No. It is up to your teacher to decide if you are required to take the quiz at the end of every strategy module. Your score will only be seen by project ESTRELLAS staff and your teacher. Your scores will never be made public in any way.

Google Docs

Why aren’t there any documents in my Google Docs?

Google Docs includes documents that you create and upload, as well as documents that other users share with you. If you have not created, uploaded, or shared any documents, none will appear in your Google Docs.

Why can’t I edit the assignment I just uploaded to Google Docs?

If you upload a file to Google Docs without converting it, you may view the file but not edit it. This means you cannot change the name (except in the Google Docs homepage) or any of the contents. If you want to be able to edit a document after you have uploaded it, you must convert it to a Google Doc.

I tried to upload an assignment to Google Docs, but it didn’t work. Why not?

If you are converting your file to a Google Doc, it will only work if the original file is less than 1 MB. If your original file is larger than 1 MB, try splitting it into smaller sections and uploading it again. Alternatively, you may upload an assignment without converting it to a Google Doc; however, if you do so, your document cannot be edited in Google Docs and the formatting may be changed. Uploading without conversion works well for PDFs, but is not recommended for Word files.

Why doesn’t the Google Dictionary/Instant Translate pop-up work in my Google Docs PDF?

At the moment, the pop-up features of Google Dictionary and Instant Translate are not compatible with Google Docs, but you can still use the extensions. To do so, copy the word you want defined or translated, click on the Google Dictionary or Instant Translate icon in your Extensions Bar, and paste the text into the text field.

How can I keep students from editing the assignments?

When you share a Google Doc, you may restrict the editing privileges of the people who share it. When the “Share” dialogue box opens, there is a button next to the address field that says “Can edit.” Click the button and from the drop-down menu that appears, then select “Can view.” You may also change the editing privileges of anyone who shares the file at any time after sharing. To do so, click the “Share” button at the top of the Google Docs home page. This will open the sharing dialogue box with a list of everyone who has access to the file. Next to each person’s name is a button that lists his or her editing privileges. To change a user’s privileges, click the button and select the desired level of access–either “Can view” or “Can edit.”

How can I rename a document in Google Docs?

You may rename your doc in either the Google Docs homepage or in the doc itself. In the homepage, right-click on the title of the doc and click “Rename” in the menu that appears. You may also check the box next to the document title and click the “More” button at the top center of your Google Docs homepage. The same drop-down menu will appear; select “Rename” and type your desired title. If you are in the doc, click on the document title at the top of the page. A dialogue box will open wherein you may edit the doc title. Note: If your file has not been converted to a Google Doc, you may not change the name within the doc itself. You must do so in the Google Docs homepage.

My Google Docs homepage is too messy. How can I declutter it?

Unfortunately, Google Docs displays every doc you have in your homepage unless you specifically tell it not to. You can make your docs easier to navigate by putting them in collections (the Google Docs version of folders). Once you have created a collection, you may select it from the left-hand side bar, and only docs that you have placed in that collection will appear. If you just can’t find a doc on your own, use the search bar at the top of the homepage. If the search term(s) you enter are anywhere in any of your docs, they will appear.

Videos

When I’m watching the skills videos, I don’t have time to perform the task before the video moves on to the next step. Why don’t you make time for that?

The videos are intended to be viewed before attempting to perform the task. Watch the whole video and try to follow the directions when it is finished. If you need to review, you may watch the video as many times as necessary. Alternatively, you may wish to pause the video, perform the task, and then play it to move on to the next step.

After I’m done watching a video, how do I get back to the page on the website I was on?

You may press the “Back” button in your browser, or you may press the “Delete” or “Backspace” key on your keyboard. If you opened the video in a new tab, simply exit the tab and return to the website.
